Album Info: | Coupled to ore cars and poised for service on a new siding adjacent to the single track main line of CSX in foreground (former Monon line to Louisville). It is reported that as many as 3 to 4 120-car unit trains per week will deliver iron ore from northern Minnesota iron ranges to the newly constructed and operational Magnetation Inc. plant in the background. The cars are loaded at the Jessie Load-Out terminal just east of Grand Rapids, MN. Magnetation utilizes state-of-the-art new technology to recover useable iron ore from what was considered spent and abandoned tailings from previous mining operations dating as far back as the 1890’s. An expected 3 million metric tons/year of ½-inch sized iron pellets will be produced which in turn will be shipped via rail by CSX to AK Steel operations in Middletown, OH and Ashland, KY. The first batch of iron pellets were produced in September 2014. |
